Essendon Bowl
(Demolished)
70 Fletcher Street, Essendon, 3040.
The Essendon Bowl sign was erected in 1962 and was a significant survivor from this era, until it was dismantled in 2004.
The sign featured a metal box with metal-trough letters spelling "ESSENDON BOWL". Behind the neon lettering, the metal box was painted with red and black stripes, which was perhaps a reference to the colours of the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League.
An internally-illuminated acrylic light box was positioned beside the neon and depicted a bowling pin. Below this was another metal box, but with unprotected neon lettering which spelled "AIRCONDITIONED".
The bowling alley has been demolished and the land is now subject to development.
