Biz Buzz Hardware
685 High Street, Thornbury, 3071.
These iconic "hammer" signs were manufactured by Claude Neon to promote a small chain of hardware stores.
A total of four Biz Buzz neon signs were manufactured and installed at different locations, however the specimen in Thornbury is the sole survivor. (A sign at 23 Keilor Road, Essendon was removed in 2004). The signs were all installed between April and May 1966.
Most of the Biz Buzz Hardware stores remained in business until 2003, when all but one of the shops closed. The remaining Thornbury business, which traded under a different name, was closed in April 2011.
The Biz Buzz Hardware sign is showing signs of rust and decay, and is not presently illuminated. The future of the sign is uncertain.
