Building Description:
Her Majesty's theatre (a.k.a The Maj) was built in 1886 but in 1929 the interior was gutted by fire.
Renovations in 1934 were designed by architects C. N. Hollinshead and Albion Walkley, leading Australian theatre specialists who retained the Second Empire exterior while designing the interior using the then-fashionable Moderne style.
In the late 1930's or early 1940's, the famous neon sign was added to the building.
There was a threat of demolition in the 1980's, but the building was saved and extensive restoration work followed.
