Building Description:
Highpoint Shopping Centre opened in 1975 as Highpoint West Shopping Centre and was constructed in the Brutalist style in a manner similar to Knox City Shopping Centre. Consisting of a Myer department store and a Target, the complex was built on a former quarry site that was elevated high upon a hill.
Extensions were subsequently made to the shopping centre, including a substantial extension in 1997 which was designed by The Buchan Group. Some of the internal spaces of Highpoint Shopping Centre are rather reminiscent of Chadstone Shopping Centre in terms of their appearance and configuration.
The Buchan Group are also responsible for a redevelopment and extension that commenced in March 2011. This extension will expand the floor space by 30,000m2 and add a David Jones department store, 100 specialty stores and a Safeway supermarket. The existing Myer department store is the only remaining component of the original shopping centre.
