Building Description:

The Block Arcade is a Melbourne landmark and one of the finest and grandest of Melbourne's 19th century shopping arcades. The extent of preservation is remarkable, given its purpose and age.

The Block Arcade has two street frontages, one on Collins Street and one on Elizabeth Street with the arcade forming an 'L' shape. The external façades are designed in the Mannerist style and feature triangular and segmental pediments; rustication and an exaggerated cornice with brackets. The internal plasterwork and tessellated tiling are significant.

The Block Arcade has been a popular shopping venue for generations and remains as one of the shopping highlights on Collins Street.
