Xavier College Chapel
Summary:
  • Built in stages between 1928 and 1934.
  • Designed by Schrieber and Jorgensen .
  • Listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (no 603667)
Building Description:

This building is a personal favourite, although it is only listed for its "architectural importance in exhibiting good design" on the Victorian Heritage register in an entry which includes several other buildings on the site.

Xavier College Chapel is considered the less worthy than the nearby Victorian buildings on the site.

The dome of the chapel can be seen for kilometres across the eastern suburbs. This is of the most formal classicising Baroque church designs in Victoria, with a giant order Roman Ionic portico, vestigial west towers, and a dominant dome and drum over the crossing.
