Description

The Douglas's Service Station sign in Footscray is believed to have been erected in the 1950's.

The sign is unusual insofar as it is a stand-alone sign on a pole, rather than fixed to or mounted upon a building. The sign is simple in its design, being a painted box with unprotected red neon spelling "DOUGLAS'S SERVICE STATION". Perhaps just as remarkable as the intact sign, is an intact business which still operates as an independent service station.

The Douglas's Service Station sign was restored c.2005 and is now regularly illuminated at night, where it can be seen from a considerable distance.
